WebFaction
Community site: login faq

When I connect to my site via ssh (in a linux environment and an osx environment), my typing is really laggy and slow to respond. There is always a delay between my typing and the appearance of the characters on the screen.

Is it my internet connection (very fast)? Could it be my ssh settings (doubtful seeing as it happens on two different computers)? Are the webfaction servers slow (is anyone else having this issue)?

My ping output:

max@max-desktop:~> ping web237.webfaction.com

This is normally caused by your internet connection latency, you can have high bandwidth, but bad latency. What is the ping time from your location to the server?

ping webXX.webfaction.com

Where XX is your server name. If it is more than a few hundred ms this can happen.

I added the output of my pings. I let it send 20 packets and got an average of 112.550ms. Is that really that bad?

That is not the right server, your web-server is web327. I did check the load average of web327 and it seems very low for the last 24 hours. Depending on your OS use these commands,

# for linux or mac,
$ mtr web327.webfaction.com
# for windows
$ pathping web327.webfaction.com

This should give you some details as to the latency between you and the server.

Thanks for checking up on that for me @johns, and sorry for that typo :) I ran mtr on my machine and got an average latency of 261.9 after about 80 pings. This does seem to be a little high :(
