How can I install a Ruby gem if I'm just using Ruby and not using Rails? The answer I saw here to a similar question talks about how to install a Ruby gem locally in a Rails app, but this isn't for a Rails app. I'm writing a Ruby script that doesn't involve Rails. I've got it running on my local system and would like to move it here. Thanks.

mkdir ~/.gems
export GEM_HOME=$HOME/.gems
gem install whatever

Hope that helps!
